Corporate Communications, 2025

Ainsley Lemon

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, I remember driving by both the Westerville and Columbus Cylinders facilities and thinking to myself, “I wonder what’s in those giant blue buildings?” Little did my twelve-year-old self know that I would spend the summer before my senior year of college interning in the corporate communications department at that very company.

My time at Worthington Enterprises has helped me grow not only as a professional but also as an individual. I have always loved both writing and design, and it’s been a dream to find a job that combines both of these passions. Throughout the summer, I enjoyed developing communications for corporate and facility-based employees to help keep everyone engaged and informed.

One of the most impactful lessons I learned is that effective communication often goes unnoticed—meaning, if people are communicating well, things mostly will go smoothy. It’s when there are gaps in communication that people notice. I’ve also come to realize that seamless communication is like a well-oiled machine: it means always operating behind the scenes, anticipating needs and staying one step ahead—while often adapting to new situations. As a communicator, you must be ready to act, solve problems and smooth over challenges at a moment's notice, which is one of my favorite parts about the job.

Another thing I gained is the practice of tailoring a message to a specific audience. There is a substantial difference in communicating externally versus internally. This requires an extra step in the thought process as what is included in an internal article may not be the same message shared externally.

Overall, my internship experience has been truly amazing, and I especially enjoyed the takeaways from the program, learning from my team and helping communicate across the company as clearly as possible. I look forward to taking the skills I have learned in this experience with me in my future career endeavors.
